Edmonton Oilers center Colby Cave , 25, died after suffering a brain hemorrhage days ago, his family and the NHL ice hockey team said .

Cave had been in an induced coma at a Toronto hospital since Thursday after doctors removed a colloid cyst that was causing the bleeding.

"It is very sad to share the news that Colby passed away early this morning," his family said in a statement on the Oilers' website. "We thank everyone for their prayers during this difficult time."

His wife, Emily, had said that due to coronavirus restrictions, the family had been unable to visit Cave in hospital.

NHL legend Wayne Gretzky wrote on Twitter: "He was a wonderful hockey player with a bright future, but an even better person. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his wife Emily and their entire family."
